Wiivolution

In January I took a visit to a local electronics store, called Saturn here in Vienna. I was there to spot some new Wii games. When I was looking at the Wii shelf (there haven't been a lot of game releases since the console launch here in Austria except for the Virtual Console) Wii Play came to my hands and I examined the enclosing package where the additional controller and the game are held. Above the barcode on the price label the product description said "Nintendo Revolution", which made me really scratch my head.

In Nintendo's first press releases, Revolution was the project code name for the company's console under development. During the E3 in 2006 Nintendo announced that the official name of the machine will be Wii from now on. Game developers, the gaming press and blogs reacted negativley onto to this decision and ironically the widespread opinion was that "Wii" is hard to pronounce.

Later, Reggie Fils-Aime the President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America stated: Revolution as a name is not ideal; it's long, and in some cultures, it's hard to pronounce. So we wanted something that was short, to the point, easy to pronounce, and distinctive. That's how "Wii", as a console name, was created.

So was it a joke of the Saturn employee who made the labels, or maybe something else? I took a photo with my cell phone camera so here you can see this funny incident.

..I think I've heard a dozen different jokes all to do with boys playing with their "Wii Wii's" (these jokes are always accompanied by vigorous arm movements)!
I don't mind so much that they didn't call it the Revolution, but with 'Wii' the jokes practically write themselves..!

I swear if one more girl cracks that joke I'm going to whack her upside the head with a Wiimote - and if anyone asks I'll just claim I was playing tennis ;D
